Not as much as I expected
(2007-01-21)
I don't read books often, so I don't have good memory not grasping of meanings...etc. So please accept this non-formal comment.
Then,
I have read and liked the book: Hagakure, of the same translator. It gives you a good idea of the samurai spirit or wisdom, commonly referred to as The Way. A very good reference that I recommend.
So, through that book I knew of this one, and so I was very much exited to read it and had high expectations, not spiritual just intellectual.
Besides the introductory text (interesting), The book is a three-letter message to a swordsman (who is a duelist to the famous Musashi). The first part is quite interesting, extensively speaking of the mind and how to free it. Although he repeats himself on the idea of no-mindedness without exploring further on the how..etc
The second letter is more on confuscianism and social order...etc. I did not find it interesting at all.
The third letter is simply a 'poor' explanation of a certain chinese text about some sword Taia. Supposedly teaching about the fighting spirit ..etc but I have found it pretty boring (compared to Hagakure).
To sum up, I only liked the beginning but had to be patient to finish the book...Maybe it would be much more interesting to read it in the original language...
