Everything I wanted, but now I want more!

Firstly, for the price, this is probably the best book I've found. It's also one of the few both in English and primarily overseen by Japanese people--two very important considerations. Still, after reading the book, more questions remain. The book just serves as a leaping off point. To really understand Shinto isn't to look at it independently from the Japanese people or their culture. If you study the Japanese people, then this is an invaluable component, and perhaps maddening as it is not so "concrete" as other religions. The book appologizes for this, but, having lived in Japan now, been fortunate enough to participate in festivals (not just as a spectator, but in preparation and clean up), more of this book makes sense: To understand one must do, must be. And this is, by and large, one of the biggest differences I've found between Shinto and other religions--Shinto is a way of life.
