AMUSING & ENGLIGHTENING, but can you get your teen to . . .　　（2003-04-26）
Obviously, taken from the adult-version Who Moved My Cheese, which sold more than a million copies. Now repackaged for teens.

Still about four characters navigating a maze, in pursuit of happiness, with varying approaches and therefore varying results. The only difference with the original is in the story before and after the mouse tale--this time, a group of teenagers in a cafeteria, rather than a group of adults attending their high school reunion.

Be unbothered by the different views about the use of mice and cheese being too simplistic (parables are never meant to present airtight arguments like a PhD thesis; they are meant to slip the ESSENCE of the idea into the heart and mind, through a DISARMINGly warm SIMPLE story).

Of limited added use if your teen has already read the original adult-version. But if you can somehow get them to read either, or have found that they already have, best not to argue with them about what you think. Ages 12 and older.

飽くまでもDiscussionのきっかけとして　　（2002-12-02）
かのベストセラー「チーズはどこへ消えた？」の若者向けヴァージョン。物語の中心となる、２匹のネズミと２人の小人が迷路の中で繰り広げる「チーズ探し」の部分は、原作とほぼ同じ。大きく異なるのは、そのエピソードがハイスクールのカフェテリアで、１人の高校生によってその親友等に向けて語られるという設定です。「チーズ」のエピソードの後の「A Discussion」の部分では原作同様、各々がチーズのエピソードを自身に当てはめてみるという構成になっているのですが、恋愛や進路の悩みなど、彼等のケースは、高校生のみならず大人でも親近感を抱けると思います。

原作では、登場人物が一様にこのエピソードに感銘を受けている様子が、いささか白々しく思えて引いてしまいましたが、この本では「チーズ」のエピソードに興味を示さない登場人物を配するなど、押しつけ感が少し和らいでいたので安心しました。ストーリーのシンプルさは、作者が意図しているように、議論のきっかけにするには手頃だと思いますが、あまりに「ひねり」や「毒気」がなさすぎて、読み物として決して面白いとは言えないというのが星4つの理由です。

英語は非常に平易で、ページ数も100ページに満たないため、中学から高校レベルの英語力があれば（多少辞書の助けを必要とするかもしれませんが）十分読みきれると思います。思春期にさしかかった甥に贈って、この本をきっかけに色々なことを話し合ってみたいと思います。
