文句いいながら読んでしまう。　　（2004-09-02）
　サリー・ロックハートが主人公の3部作の第二作。読んでいて思うのだが、この作者は登場人物に対して全然優しくない。「何でそうなるんだあ！」と思う個所がそこかしこにある。

　それでも、やはり読んでしまう。しかし、今回は「悪人ではないが結果的に悪人よりもタチガ悪い人達」が少なからず出てくる。本人に悪気が無いだけに読んでいて余計に腹が立つ。

　今回のサリーの「敵」は結構魅力的だ。それもこの作品の魅力の一つ。しかし、サリーって男にもてるなあ。まあ、確かにこんな女性がいたらさぞかし魅力的だろう。ある意味大変だが。

黄金の羅針盤で有名なプルマンの別の三部作の第二作目です。
1 The ruby in the smoke
2 The shadow in the north
3 The tiger in the well　　の三部作です。
第二作ではサリーは投資相談の事務所を構えキャリアをスタートさせます。第一作で出会った友人たちも彼女をたすけたり、彼女が彼らを助けたり、よい関係は続きます。

顧客の一人の投資先に疑問を抱いた彼女は調査を開始し、巨悪を暴きます。

英語は第一作よりするする読めました。
どうしても三部作の中継ぎという感じになってしまいますが、サリーが成長して行動範囲が広がり冒険が大規模になるのではらはらどきどきは第一作以上です。

The second and middle volume in the Sally Lockhart series contains an amazing array of well-drawn characters, as well as tortuous plot. Perhaps this overwhelming complexity and detail, is why I did not enjoy this as much as the other two. We know Sally so well, the so-called "surprise ending" comes not as a surprise, but as a logical conclusion. Sally, six years later, is no longer a girl, but a young businesswoman, now in a deepening and therefore volatile relationship with Frederick. The maturation of their relationship parallels the convergence of her inquiry into the suspicious collapse of a shipping firm ( which causes a significant loss to one of her clients,) and Frederick`s investigation involving a prestidigitator, who may or may not be clairvoyant, who claims to have witnessed a murder. They uncover an evil plot to create "the most horrible weapon ever invented," which could hold whole populations captive to the whim of their government. The plot careens through the final chapters to the explosive climax.
