Wonderfully insightful

Sure, I live in Japan and yes I'm interested in learning more about Japan's history, but this book digs deeper than that. It presents an account of what life was like on any ship travelling to the far side of the world at the time of Shakespeare. It provides details of what life was like at the time from England to Java to Japan.
For anyone living in Japan and especially those people who are looking for an outsiders look at Japan at this time, I highly recommend this book.

[Full Title] "SAMURAI WILLIAM: The Englishman Who Opened Japan", or "Samurai William: The Adventurer Who Unlocked Japan"
Both an engaging tale of the absolute Japanophile. "The Englishmen who made the trip were shocked when they met Adams--he spoke, dressed and acted Japanese, and was clearly distressed by the crude behaviour of THE ENGLISH." Uhm, wow.
Also a detailed narrative on the opening of Japan to trade.
Thus a delight for those who are both fascinated by William Adams or Japanophiles in general (even if you are not the blond blue-eyed who chooses to go in kimono or hakama, where the locals are all in Western dress), and wish a light dose of Japan history. 'Might fall short for those who are only one of the two.
