Saw the play, couldn't get into the book (2007-08-14)
The book feels like a throwback to the age of overly-complex names and simple fantasy. I like those as I grew up on them. Throw in bad words, unpleasant characters, sex, and it just doesn't inspire me to finish, however. Yeah, I didn't finish this book, an abandonment I've only reserved for a few books. The pace just doesn't pick up, the characters don't have saving graces. I suppose if you are a cynic then this would be for you. It's like fantasy for people that want to give it a slick, wry, ugly cast. Watch the play, as it's quite good. Pass on this thing.

"Wicked!" (2004-06-21)
I picked up this book after hearing my friend rave about "Wicked" he saw on Broadway, which was based on this book. But the book turned out to be something much more than what I had expected. Issues of race, politics, sexualiy, social class, education, etc. etc. So many underlying messages and depth and reflection on our society and history. It also makes me want to pick up the Wizard of Oz, and pay more attention to the Wicked Witch of the West. We all know about Dorothy and her dog, the Scarecrow, Lion, and Tinman. I really enjoyed how Maguire gave Elphaba (the Witch) a complex personality that is believable and interesting, and also praise him for his powerful imagination. After reading this one, I will definitely be checking out his other novels too.
