Life at the bottom (2004-10-01)
Toynbee moves into a low income district and takes low income jobs to expose the underbelly of Britain. In a country where 70 percent of people are homeowners, Toynbee shows us the ones who got left behind. Working for what ammounts to less than the legal minimum wage people doing two and even three jobs a day cannot make ends meet. The social support system is inadequate and does nothing to give people the slightest hope of climbing out of the pit they are in.
Government and private institutions alike, skim from the already
desperate end of the bone. As always it is mainly woman getting the short end of the stick.
Toynbee`s account of how things are and what she sees is so honest its painful.
Toynbee knows her subject well and joins the dots between the
destruction of the country under Thatcher to the failure of the New Labour to follow through on election promises.
Throughtout the book she gives well thought out ideas for reform.
It is a must read for anyone interested in British society.
